Went to a crafts fair in Adams Morgan, and had the second moment of true appreciation for U.S. culture (the first being 'Stay' on the n.j. turnpike) since being back. Not the crafts so much (although they were clever, and we appreciated the "drive like a diplomat" t-shirts, overall it made me very nostalgic for plaza serrano on the weekends) but a breakdance competition going on. just a huge, so diverse crowd, chilling and communing, enjoying the sun, the hip-hop, pressing towards the stage below, peering through the chainlink fence above, all the good bits of urban life all there. the aliveness of it, and joys of playing in a concrete jungle.
and then a spin through bethesda before the Kennedy Center's kickoff for a celebration of the arts in China. fireworks over the potomac, set off from boats circling around between roosevelt island and the parkway. traffic stopped on the key bridge; a plane flew through the plumes of smoke and sparks overhead (that must have been quite an introduction to dc) .
