Opening Night! Tonight! (I don't know what to wear! I don't know how to open a bottle of wine!)
eeps.

Also, a whole dissertation can be written on hip-hop versus techno as a metaphor for evolving global worldviews or some such. I expounded my theory over brunch, waving a fry vigorously in the air while the friend listened skeptically- the waitress chose then to ask how things were going (fry waving is not, I suspect, acceptable at chic dupont brunch spots).

Also, we carved a pumpkin, yay.

I feel sort of awful.
I was working box office and it was pay what you can, and we still had ticket prices from the last show up anyway, so when this one little old man comes up and asked what the normal price for a thursday ticket was (well, i knew that- $32) and what the senior price was (and I glanced over and the first number I saw was $34, and that was def. not right) I just made up $30, adding, but you know, its pay what you can, anything is fine. and his eyes got all wide.
and he was very persistant- the senior price? (um...yes?) is that 15% percent (well, its not calculated like that...) are you sure? (uh-oh...um...) ok, then...and slid over a carefully counted out thirty for two tickets...
and really, it was supposed to be like $26 for a regular weekday senior price. $34 was Disputation senior weekend. .
and in a night when the average per ticket was $7 (but the dude who gave a quarter each for two really skewed that down).
and its only 4 dollars but I feel horrible awful.

downtown bethesda had an art festival, today and yesterday. among the conclusions:
I am in daschund withdrawal.
I really missed having four seasons. my eyes welled up over pumpkin pie ice cream.
the disneyfication of bethesda (singsing's term) continues apace, with the trolley stop benches now featuring carved backs with "whimsical" painted nature scenes and poetry.
I may be highly allergic to office life (the anxiety dreams have begun and its still two weeks to opening night- come to String Fever, btw) but I'm too bourgie for the revolution.

Arkansas tomorrow. I envision dusty backroads and green fields and everything in technicolor. This may be an awful stereotype, but I hope I'm not too disappointed. Also, this is the first time I've noticed that arkansas = ar + kansas.

Went to a crafts fair in Adams Morgan, and had the second moment of true appreciation for U.S. culture (the first being 'Stay' on the n.j. turnpike) since being back. Not the crafts so much (although they were clever, and we appreciated the "drive like a diplomat" t-shirts, overall it made me very nostalgic for plaza serrano on the weekends) but a breakdance competition going on. just a huge, so diverse crowd, chilling and communing, enjoying the sun, the hip-hop, pressing towards the stage below, peering through the chainlink fence above, all the good bits of urban life all there. the aliveness of it, and joys of playing in a concrete jungle.

and then a spin through bethesda before the Kennedy Center's kickoff for a celebration of the arts in China. fireworks over the potomac, set off from boats circling around between roosevelt island and the parkway. traffic stopped on the key bridge; a plane flew through the plumes of smoke and sparks overhead (that must have been quite an introduction to dc) .
