I was supposed to be making calls for the artistic director, or packing for harvard-yale, brushing up on the fight songs or thinking about micronesia. instead, my friend's pumpkin cinnamon and coconut curry mt. pleasant apartment, drinking pale ale and dancing to bhangra, just the two of us with the bass up high to blast out the wannabe dj's downstairs. i even rode the bus. need more moments like this. sweetness.

In the final french class, we attempted to tell our teacher that jazz can be emotional music, which involved me giving up with words to describe Mingus's Haitian Fight Song, frantically scatting the bass riff and then just waving my arms around in a vain effort to transmit the full horn section crescendoing in my head.
She looked amused, if not entirely convinced.

(ok, the real translation. it matters.)
A sentiment rarely articulated this well. A good reminder.
A "Thank You" Note
I owe so much
to those I don't love.
The relief as I agree
that someone else needs them more.
The happiness that I am not
the wolf to their sheep.
The peace I feel with them
the freedom-
love can neither give,
nor take that.
I don't wait for them
as in window-to-door-and-back.
Almost as patient as a sundial,
I understand
what love can't.
and forgive
as love never would.
From a rendezvous to a letter
is just a few days or weeks,
not an eternity.
Trips with them always go smoothly,
oncerts are heard,
cathedrals are toured,
scenery is seen.
And when seven hills and rivers
come between us,
the hills and rivers
can be found on any map.
They deserve the credit
if I live in three dimensions,
in nonlyrical and nonrhetorical space,
with a genuine, shifting horizon.
They themselves don't realize
how much they hold in their empty hands.
"I don't owe them a thing,"
would be love's answer
to this open question.

There is a way between voice and presence where information flows.
In disciplined silence it opens. With wandering talk it closes.
