"Thank you for the lovely Hannukah card. My father always told me to shun the horrible, politically correct term "HappyHolidays" and though Hallmark used that term on the card (and the snowman is a rather non-denominational figure), Iappreciate your recognition of my Jewish heritage and your Hannukah wishes. In this spirit, I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

Top 5 songs I will forever associate with 2004 (in chronological order)
1. Maroon 5, Sunday Morning
2. Gomez, Catch Me Up
3. Charly Garcia, Me Siento Mucho Mejor
4. Howie Day, Collide
5. Elliott Smith, Say Yes

Top 5 days of 2004 (taken independently, in chronological order)
1. January 15
2. May 1
3. June 14
4. September 2
5. September 10

and moving on, and moving on.

Happy New Year!

As for the tsunami...I'm not ignoring it, though I did here. But words can't help very much...can they?

"Every time I pin down what I think I want it slips away..."
"The past can be seized only as an image which flashes up at the instant when it can be recognized and is never seen again"

(Thoroughly Modern Millie, Ahmad Jamal, Dave & Busters, more chocolate/sweets than perhaps any other week ever, National Gallery, Pageant of Peace, a goose down comforter= too much sleep not enough workety work, jigsaw puzzle over A Christmas Story. Opening a tub of coconut body butter and finding myself in the Dominican Republic. but to get there, I have to write 2 papers and 2 thesis chapters, and take 2 exams)

I have classes tomorrow, and goodness knows we have exams after break, but in a way the semester ended today: curled up in a chair in lamont library, looking past the snow falling outside to the Kong and St. Pauls, reading Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good Very Bad Day.
(and then the 5 hour pride and prejudice marathon with the choir girls...)

So I supposedly spent a month doing research.
Then, 3.5 more months doing additional research.
I gave a 15 minute presentation on my work to date, and it went fine.
I have notes, and binders, and wav files and books.
I wrote my thesis proposal 8 months ago.
My first chapter is due in a day and a half....
and I have nothing. NOTHING.
how did this...happen? is it too late to become a literature major, after all?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I amuse you, but I bore you."
Closer. We couldn't tell if the older couple behind us was laughing or crying (honestly) but there was someone snickering to our right.
It was easy to see why, and very easy to not follow suit. A movie with distance: it was ascetic, in many ways, which contrasted unsettingly with the brutal subject. That, ultimately being the point, revisted time and again by the characters. All the talking, even all the actions: all the signifiers in the world have no guaranteed stake in any truth, and are but the most evanescent of bridges between the inner workings of two people.
or something like that.

Christmasque, at the conductors house. Eggnog, cider, brownies, caroling around the neighborhood. Christmas songs, of course, which elicits a fair about of good-natured Jewish/ Christian rivalry.
Reconvened at the house, gossip and banter, and comments on a recent Boston Globe article commenting on the Glee Club's homogeneity eventually (inevitably) leading to A saying: "well, Jesus was a Jew".
the response, from a Gleek: So was Caiaphas.
Chuckles all around, including A (and J, though he shoots me an uncertain look). a couple side comments. then
A: Um, uh, who was Caiaphas?

let the holidays continue...:)

'Cliffe Notes concert tonight!
I am excited.
I am also excited that I am functioning on not much sleep, and though I'm exhausted, I can function. I thought I'd lost that.

Also, my "Rock in Argentina" History Thesis Writers Conference presentation on Monday.
Very Intimidating.

Welcome to Widener Library, stacks division.
Our motto: "The librarian's need for order has turned Widener into an uncongenial colossus devoid of all human warmth" (Harvard Crimson, 1937)

mmm. so pretty.
Dorme enquanto eu velo...
Deixa-me sonhar...
Nada em mim é risonho.
Quero-te para sonho,
Não para te amar.
A tua carne calma
É fria em meu querer.
Os meus desejos são cansaços.
Nem quero ter nos braços
Meu sonho do teu ser.
Dorme, dorme. dorme,
Vaga em teu sorrir...
Sonho-te tão atento
Que o sonho é encantamento
E eu sonho sem sentir.
-F. Pessoa
